The owners of Rocky drift Nature Reserve are planning to develop the reserve and are requesting authorisation to subdivide the land into 40 free hold stands for holiday homes. In addition they would like to build a 20 bed lodge and a 10 tent luxury campsite, and includes an application to extract surface water from the Joubert Spruit and return sewage system outflows to the spruit.

The Rocky Drift Nature Reserve, a private reserve, is situated in one of the last remaining unspoilt valleys in the Waterval Boven area. The valley has been host to both rock climbers and hikers form all over the world for years. Blessed with a crystal clear mountain stream that has its origins from several springs on the escarpment this valley is home to a multitude of birds, antelope, reptiles and small mammals some of which have red data status. If this development were to be allowed, Waterval Boven and its community stand to lose this last remaining pristine heritage, irreplaceable and scarred forever.
