SA ROCKS TO AFRICA'S BIGGEST CLIMBING FESTIVAL
27 September 2009, Waterval Boven, Mpumalanga: For two days rock climbers from across SA descended on the picturesque town of Waterval Boven, Mpumalanga to compete in Africa's biggest climbing festival, the Boven Roc Rally, now into its seventh year.
In addition to South Africa's top climbers, this year's event attracted a number of international climbers from Austria, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
Over 100 climbers competed in the 2009 Boven Roc Rally, a rock climbing endurance event that involves a team of two, racing between the cliff faces around Waterval Boven and doing as many climbs as possible on the first day, then climbing the hardest route each participant can on the second day.
Says Gustav Janse van Rensburg from Waterval Boven-based Roc 'n Rope Adventures, which coordinates the annual event, "the aim of the Boven Roc Rally is to bring pros and beginners together to socialise, compete and have fun together on the best rock in South Africa."
The 2009 Boven Roc Rally was sponsored by Black Diamond, First Ascent, La Sportiva, Edelrid, Tranquilitas Adventure Farm, Roc 'n Rope Adventures and local Waterval Boven businesses.

Roc Rally 2009 Climbing Festival in Waterval Boven 25-26 September
This is a yearly rock climbing endurance event that involves a team of two, racing between the cliff faces around Waterval Boven and doing as many climbs as you can on the first day, then climbing one route as hard as you can, in 14 hours, over 2 days.
Our objective is to bring the pros and beginners together to socialise, compete and have fun together. As in a golf match, every climber gets given a handicap based upon his or her climbing performance over the last year and other personal best performances.
Basically to win this competition, you will have to climb a lot (against your handicap) on the first day and then climb hard on the second day. A logical and fair but complicated system will be explained before the start of the competition.
